We knew that the Blue Bellies were going to come down this road
So we set up our ball cannons pointing down it with a full load
Our pickets were set and our battle lines were drawn
Who knows if we win the battle we might wind up on the White House Lawn?
They called this place Bull Run
Thousands would die here from the barrel of a gun
We saw the Yankee politicians with their carriages on a hill up yonder
Thinking the battle was going to be a picnic-- nothing to ponder
We caught them by surprise coming down that road I don’t know why
Plain as day we were there ready for them to die
They came down that road but they never had a chance at all
The cannons roared, smoked and shot those metal balls and they all did fall..
The grey soldiers of the South, flew their battle flags high
They moved forward and chased the Yankees and they really did fly
General Jackson was in charge of the Confederate front line
A victory for the South and they celebrated with wine
But thousands of men, both blue and grey, died that day
Just because men couldn’t solve their problems any other way.
